Katie’s Story

“It’s everyone. When people around you pour that belief into you, you give it back to them. And it comes out in the purest joy, in that childish love for the game that I think is deep inside every soccer player.”

-Katie Meyer, Interview with Just Women’s Sports

Katie’s Story

Katie was a daughter, sister, friend and teammate that one can only dream of having in their lives. She was loving and loyal, and consistently offered her time, empathy and kindness to others in the world around her. She had a radiant, driven, wildly funny, quick-witted and passionate personality. Katie truly sought to bring joy to everyone she encountered.

Katie was born on January 20, 2000 in Burbank, CA. She was raised with two sisters, Samantha and Siena. Katie’s early years were filled with older sister Samantha as together they explored parks, collected flowers, played on beaches and playgrounds, experienced adventures in Girl Scouts, and occasionally were able to celebrate holidays with extended family in the Midwest. She eagerly tried various sports and activities and was always an adventuresome child who radiated a boundless happy energy. She had a vibrant love for school from an early age and was always open to new friendships with anyone, happy to spend time playing and running outside, or creating art and painting on rainy days.

Her early school years were spent at Pico Canyon Elementary in Stevenson Ranch, CA. She had amazing teachers and a passion for learning and everything that school offered. She had a drive to be involved in student government and as her big personality grew, she would find herself drawn to be part of the school’s talent shows where she would play a funny character or sing an epic pop song.

Katie has played soccer since she was 5 years old. She played many positions, and eventually tried her hand goalkeeping and quickly displayed a natural talent and fearlessness for that position. She worked very hard on her craft and soon ascended into the national travel club soccer world, the ECNL, as her competitive spirit and passion fueled her and her teammates. Win, lose or draw, Katie enjoyed making an impact in the game. And, she loved being the unofficial assistant coach to her younger sister Siena’s soccer team whenever she could.

Through high school in Newbury Park, CA, Katie stayed involved in various activities at her school, including being a kicker on the football team. She took up surfing the waters off the shores of Ventura County and loved it. She traveled frequently, attending numerous US Youth National Team soccer training camps around the country and a few tournaments abroad, grateful to be representing her country. She always stayed very close with her sisters, they were the “three musketeers” and they enjoyed each other at home, going shopping, sipping coffee at eclectic shops, playing board games, hiking and traveling together.

It was a dream of hers to attend school and play soccer at Stanford University. She was part of the memorable 2019 NCAA Championship, and became a Team Captain her last two seasons. Her teammates meant the absolute world to her and she held fiercely tight bonds with them. But in addition to soccer, Katie thrived in making friendships across the spectrum of students on campus. She majored in International Relations with a minor in History, studied Italian and was a Resident Assistant. She represented her University with passion, both on the field and off.  But Katie was far more than a soccer player. She worked hard in her studies and earned a highly coveted spot with The Mayfield Fellows Program, had been chosen to be a Defense Innovation Scholar, was slated to do a TEDx talk, was an ambassador for Just Women’s Sports, was preparing to teach a class at Stanford Design School, and had started a podcast with a subsidiary of Facebook. Katie was an active, intellectually curious student, eager to explore the world around her. She was also awaiting acceptance to Stanford Law School, as she continued to pursue opportunities of interest to her at Stanford.

Katie Meyer wanted to do big things in this world. And she did. Katie had incredible potential and her future was limitless. At her young age, she already had such vast opportunities which were only the beginning of what she was capable of and those who believed in her.

However, Katie is not missed because of all the big things she did. The truth is, she is missed because of all the little things she did. The bright smile of hers, hellos to anyone, her strong warm hugs, her way of always making you feel special, her joyous dancing and leading cheers at another team’s game on campus, playing hide and seek with her cousins, fishing with Grandpa, laying with Mom on the couch wanting sore muscles rubbed, laughing and playing soccer with Dad, singing at the top of her lungs in the car, or church, or really anywhere, and still wanting to hold hands with family and friends on walks…

Katie was wholeheartedly cherished. And because of her beautiful, loving and genuine humanity as a daughter, sister, friend and teammate… Katie is now wholeheartedly missed. By all of us.

And she forever will be.
